What translates,
and what doesn’t.
When the pandemic forced almost all of psychoanalytic work online for two years, much of the field had to find out what actually moved across the medium and what didn’t. The honest answer turned out to be: more than expected, but not everything.
What translates well is the conversation itself — language, thought, the kind of attention that two people pay each other when they have agreed to take something seriously. What is somewhat reduced is the shared physical space: the ambient information of being in a room together, the way silence sits differently between two bodies than between two faces on a screen.
For some kinds of work, especially with new clients beginning long-form therapy, I still prefer to start in person when geography allows. For established clients, for those who live further from Mar Vista, and for the weeks when life is genuinely in the way, video sessions are a real and sustainable option.

- Where can you see clients by video?
- Anywhere in California (under LPCC licensure) and anywhere in Massachusetts (under LMHC licensure). Both licenses are active and in good standing.
- How does psychoanalytic work translate to video?
- More than people expect. The work has always relied on language and on the relationship between two people; video preserves both. What is lost is the shared physical room, which matters — but for many clients, the gains in accessibility and consistency more than outweigh it.
- What platform do you use?
- A HIPAA-compliant secure video platform (SimplePractice or equivalent). You will receive a session link by email. No download required.
- Can I do some sessions in person and some by video?
- Yes, often the best arrangement for clients who are near Mar Vista but travel for work — in-person when possible, video when not. Continuity matters more than format consistency.
